PRODUCTIONS & ARTISTS
The fourteen productions of the third edition of IN TRANSIT focus
on the body as a medium of perception, memory, rebellion, knowledge
and transformation. The body is viewed as a vehicle for cultural
and political projections and as the subject of knowledge and redefinition;
as a medium of creativity whose origins lie in the spiritual.
Seven World premieres, three European premieres and three German
premieres are among the highlights in these 13 days of programming.

LAB
Discarded Practices
Curator: André Lepecki, performance theorist, dramaturg,
artist (New York)
The Laboratory (LAB) - IN TRANSIT's creative core - takes the Utopian
idea driving the festival a step further. Unlike other, traditional
programmes, which merely stage events, the LAB - the distinguishing
feature of IN TRANSIT - brings personalities and experts in diverse
disciplines from across the globe together in a space for discussion
and interaction.

KOFFI INVITES - well known dancers and performers improvise
at Koffi's invitation. In a further contribution to the programme,
curator and host Koffi Kôkô invites friends to take
part in a spontaneous dialogue of dance. "Koffi invites ...
"makes clear that IN TRANSIT is at heart process-oriented:
The events are open to the public, but rather than presenting a
"finished product", they allow the audience to see how
artists engage in the creative process.

INTOLLERANZA 04
Special | with Koffi Kôkô
A film by Bettina Ehrhardt on Luigi Nono's "aziona scenica",
or stage activity - a term he used to describe his operas. Luigi
Nono's works are almost unique in the history of twentieth century
music for the stand they took against dictatorship, bureaucratisation
and indifference. INTOLLERANZA, composed in the early 1960s, expressed
Nono's concerns over racial hatred and suppression. Taking Nono's
opera as a basis and in cooperation with dancer and choreograph
Koffi Kôkô, Bettina Erhardt has created an impressive
film calling for tolerance and aesthetic resistance. The film, commissioned
by German public broadcaster WDR and the Cologne Triennial, was
produced by bce film and premiered on April 29 in Cologne's Museum
Ludwig as part of a music festival centred on Luigi Nono's works.

SPACE OF SILENCE
A dance and performance festival like IN TRANSIT is packed with
new impressions, exposing the audiences to totally new feelings
peaking perhaps in the heightened sensuality of the samba in the
"Ballroom". Such emotion also needs a counterweight, a
space for concentration, re-centering and meditation. Koffi Kôkô
provides this balance by creating a "Space of silence",
a specially designed room within the House of World Cultures which
offers visitors a place of peace and contemplation, and a chance
to regain their inner balance.
