> The Lab Idea
How do the performing arts develop in cultural contexts as widely divergent as the New York of the immigrants, China with its radical upheavals, Beirut after the civil war and Serbia after Milosevic? What paths do theatre makers, dancers and visual artists take in times of political and social upheaval? What is happening on the fringes of the performing arts?
Posing these and other questions, the IN TRANSIT Lab becomes a platform for the world's latest theatre developments - practice-oriented and experimental. The Lab is the forum for new co-productions, for work in progress, for background discussions and artistic exchange. The New York artist Ralph Lemon will hold a residency. Other artists in the Lab will be Walid Raad and Tanja Ostojic. For a period of ten days to one month Koffi Kôkô, Ong Keng Sen and Ping Chong will rehearse in Berlin before the premiere of their commissioned works and co-productions. The dramaturg and scholar André Lepecki will spend 14 days accompanying the process of IN TRANSIT. Lectures and talk shows will open up the artistic processes to the public.
The result is an unusual series of events ranging from lectures to performance, dance theatre and installations, presented by outstanding artists who have spent many years working on issues of memory, history, migration and mobile identities.

> The Talk Shows
In a series of talk shows, Ong Keng Sen, Johannes Odenthal and André Lepecki will ask the artists of IN TRANSIT 2003 about their working methods, their cultural and political environments, about their biographies. This will bring transparency into the fascinating contexts of artistic production and create new criteria for forward-looking performance art.
